En el S. XIX en España se crearon en muchos Institutos jardines botánicos con fines didácticos. El Instituto provincial de Córdoba tuvo uno durante 51 años. Al conmemorarse el 50 aniversario de la nueva sede del Instituto Séneca, heredero de aquel, en el curso 2015/2016, se proyecta hacer un nuevo jardín en 2.500 m2 de terreno disponible y adecuado, dentro de su recinto.

Este permite introducir plantas de diversas especies en distintas condiciones de insolación y humedad. Se pretende mostrar, además de variedad morfológica y taxonómica, la adaptabilidad al medio, diseñando cinco espacios diferenciados que recrean, combinando árboles, arbustos y matorrales, comunidades vegetales propias de los ambientes ecológicos, y pisos bioclimáticos más frecuentes en Andalucía: bosque y matorral mediterráneo esclerófilo, mediterráneo árido, vegetación de montaña y coníferas, comunidades hidrofíticas y sotos de ribera.

Se comentan los detalles técnicos del proyecto, planteado para realizar a lo largo de cuatro años y guiado por profesores de Biología y Geología y directivos del centro, en el que los estudiantes participan de manera activa. Se muestra cómo en el primer año se han acometido ciertas tareas de acondicionamiento del terreno y se han plantado 321 plantas de 37 especies distintas.

Se pretende crear, mantener y usar un espacio-jardín aumentando su valor natural y botánico convirtiéndolo en recurso didáctico y diseñando actividades sobre anatomía y fisiología vegetal, taxonomía y ecología, a distintos niveles académicos. Y además, poderlo aprovechar para otros usos: descanso, reuniones, clases al aire libre, etc.

The origin of the Secondary Schools was linked to the enhancement of development and teaching of sciences in Spain during the 19th century. Within this context, Botanical Gardens with educational purposes were created in many secondary schools. The Secondary School of Cordoba province had its own Botanical garden from 1858 to 1910. On the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the new Secondary School Seneca, heir of the former, during the course 2015-2016, a new garden of 2,500 m2 is being constructed within this secondary school land.

The location and characteristics of this area allow the introduction of a diversity of plants adapted to different conditions of sunlight and humidity. This garden intends to show not only the morphological and taxonomic diversity but also the adaptability of plants to the environment. Thus, five different spaces have been designed to represent, combining trees, bushes and scrub, the plant communities of the ecological environments, biogeographic or bioclimatic levels more frequent in Andalucía, i.e. Mediterranean sclerophyllous forest and scrub, arid Mediterranean, mountain flora and conifers, hydrophylous communities and river banks groves.

Technical details of the project are also analysed according to the plans to be developed along four years in which students participate actively under the leadership of Biology and Geology teachers, as well as the school Direction. It is shown how some tasks of soil preparation and the planting of 321 plants belonging to 37 different species have been conducted during the first year

The goals of the project are as follows: creating, maintaining and making a garden space while increasing its natural and botanical value. Turning the garden itself into a resource of learning, by designing educational activities on plant anatomy and physiology, taxonomy and ecology at different academic levels. Finally, ensuring that this venue is also useful for leisure, meetings and outdoor classes.
