En el año 2009 se cumplió el centenario de la fundación de la sección ‘Espeleológica’ de Santander de la Real Sociedad Española de Historia Natural, creada en 1909 a iniciativa del director de la Estación de Biología Marítima de dicha ciudad, José Rioja Martín, y del director del Colegio de los PP. Salesianos, Jesús Carballo García, con el fin de hallar apoyos a su iniciativa de institucionalización de la Espeleología. En su primera etapa (1909-1917), especialmente prolífica, la sección de Santander tuvo un rápido desarrollo en el número de socios y realizó una importante actividad científica, que se intensificó con motivo de la creación en 1912 de la Comisión de Exploraciones Espeleológicas en el seno del Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, ambos dependientes de la Junta para Ampliación de Estudios e Investigaciones Científicas. Con el apoyo de las publicaciones de la Real Sociedad Española de Historia Natural, este trabajo revisa la obra científica de insignes naturalistas españoles y extranjeros estrechamente vinculados con los comienzos de la investigación institucional de la Prehistoria y la Bioespeleología en España. Las publicaciones mencionadas son referencia obligada para investigar una etapa pionera de las exploraciones y descubrimientos de cuevas en España y, de manera muy especial, de la actual región de Cantabria, entonces provincia de Santander.

In 2009 was fulfilled the centenary of the founding of the Santander ‘Speleological’ Section of the Spanish Royal Society of Natural History. It was founded in 1909 for initiative of the director of the Marine Biological Station in Santander, the professor of zoology José Rioja Martín, and the director of the Salesian College in Santander, Jesús Carballo García, with the intention of finding support to their initiative of institutionalization of the Speleology. In its first period (1909-1917), that was especially prolific, the number of members of the Section of Santander had a fast development and it made an important scientific activity, that intensified after the creation, in 1912, of the Commission of Speleological Explorations in the National Museum of Natural Sciences of Madrid, both depending on the Junta para Ampliación de Estudios e Investigaciones Científicas, JAE (Board for Advanced Studies and Scientific Research). With the support of the publications of the Spanish Royal Society of Natural History, this work revises the scientific research of important Spanish and foreing naturalists that were closely linked with the begginings of the institutional research of the Prehistory and the Biospeleology in Spain. The mentioned publications are a referent for the investigation of a pioneer period in the exploration and discovery of caves in Spain, and very especially, in the region of Cantabria, then the province of Santander.
