El estudio de los equinodermos de aguas españolas tiene una gran trayectoria, pero son escasas las ocasiones en las que se han incluido especies de hábitats profundos. Las prospecciones realizadas más allá de la plataforma continental son más frecuentes en la actualidad y nos permitirá incorporar nuevos registros de especies. Este hecho junto con la necesidad de integrar toda la información acumulada a lo largo de estos años ha propiciado la revisión de los listados de equinodermos, que hasta ahora estaban disponibles. Atendiendo a dicha actualización, se han encontrado un total de 184 especies citadas en aguas andaluzas lo que representa el 53,18% de las especies citadas en aguas españolas (346), de las cuales el 47,40% se encuentra en la demarcación sudatlántica, y el 31,79% en la demarcación del estrecho y Alborán. Los resultados de este estudio revelan que ambas demarcaciones comparten 74 especies, que potencialmente podrían encontrarse el área del estrecho de Gibraltar. Sin embargo, el registro de algunas especies resultó ser poco fiable, considerando su área de distribución, como Astropecten jonstoni, Astropecten platyacanthus, Echinocardium mediterraneum, Henricia abisalis, Ophidiaster ophidianus Psammechinus microtuberculatus, Sphaeriodiscus placenta y Taeniogyrus venustus, o bien se detectaron ausencias como Hacelia attenuata, muy frecuente en el mar de Alborán y con suficientes registros publicados. En cualquier caso, se necesitaría un estudio más profundo que considere especies de difícil identificación, como las estrellas del género Luidia o dilucidar si existen diferencias morfológicas significativas entre distintas especies de los géneros Ophiothrix y/o Brissopsis, en combinación con técnicas moleculares.

The study of echinoderms from Spanish waters has a long history, but in the most cases they do not include species from deep habitats. Surveys carried out beyond the continental shelf are more frequent today and they will allow us to incorporate new records. This fact, together with the necessity to integrate all accumulated information over the years, has prompted us to review the lists of echinoderms available, until now. Based on this update, a total of 184 species were cited in Andalusian waters, which represents 53.18% of the Spanish ones (346). The 47.40% of these species were found in the South Atlantic division, and 31 .79% in the division of the Strait and Alborán. The results of this study reveal that both divisions share 74 species that could potentially be found in the Strait of Gibraltar. However, the record of some species turned out to be unreliable, considering their area of distribution, such as Astropecten jonstoni, Astropecten platyacanthus, Echinocardium mediterraneum, Henricia abisalis, Ophidiaster ophidianus Psammechinus microtuberculatus, Sphaeriodiscus placenta and Taeniogyrus venustus, or absences such as Hacelia attenuata which is a very frequent species in the Alboran Sea and occurrence supported by enough published records. In any case, deep studies will be needed to clarify the presence of different sea stars species of Luidia, or to elucidate whether there are significant morphological differences between the species of Ophiothrix and/or Brissopsis, in combination with molecular biology techniques.
