Memorias de la RSEHN (segunda época)

El mapa geomorfológico es una cartografía temática de orden geológico que muestra las formas del terreno, su distribución y las relaciones entre sí. Se realiza una revisión histórica de su desarrollo, desde su aparición a principios del siglo XX hasta el momento actual, incidiendo en el papel catalizador y unificador de la Unión Geográfica Internacional (IGU) y en su implantación y crecimiento a nivel institucional en los distintos países. También se analiza su contenido y los distintos formatos o tipos de mapas geomorfológicos más utilizados. Especial atención se tiene con el desarrollo de esta cartografía en España y el papel del IGME en él, destacando su diseño de mapa sistemático a escala 1:50.000 y sus derivados, elaborado y editado junto al geológico a la misma escala. Por último, a pesar de su complejidad se subraya la utilidad de este mapa pues constituye una exhaustiva base de datos del terreno sobre el que nos movemos con aplicaciones tanto académicas como profesionales.

The geomorphological map is a thematic map of geological order that shows the forms of the terrain, their distribution and the relations between them. A historical review of its development, from its appearance at the beginning of the twentieth century up to the present moment, focusing on the catalytic and unifying role of the International Geographical Union (IGU) and its implementation and growth at the institutional level in the different countries. It also analyzes its content and the different formats or types of geomorphological maps most used. Special attention is given to the development of this cartography in Spain and the role of the IGME in it, highlighting its systematic map design at scale 1: 50,000 and its derivatives, elaborated and edited along with the geological to the same scale. Finally, in spite of its complexity, the usefulness of this map is emphasized as it constitutes an exhaustive database of the terrain on which we move with both academic and professional applications.
