O âmbito da Geologia Estrutural e da Tectónica é identificar, caracterizar e interpretar os movimentos e as deformações da litosfera em todas as escalas. A cartografia constitui uma parte fundamental desse estudo. São cartografáveis não só as estruturas aflorantes, como as que se localizam no subsolo, da crosta ao manto superior, quer nas zonas continentais como nas oceânicas. Na construção de cartas estruturais e tectónicas são utilizados dados obtidos por observações de campo, dados obtidos por levantamentos geofísicos e dados obtidos por deteção remota. Os avanços tecnológicos e a era digital permitem, atualmente, aceder e cartografar as zonas profundas da litosfera, os fundos marinhos, as zonas continentais e insulares remotas e, mais além, as outras superfícies planetárias.

The scope of Structural Geology and Tectonics is to identify, characterize and interpret the movements and strains of the lithosphere in all scales. Mapping is a fundamental part of this study. It is possible to map not only outcropping structures, but also those located in the subsoil, from the crust to the upper mantle, both on the continents and in the oceans. In the construction of structural and tectonic maps, data obtained by field observations, data obtained by geophysical surveys and remote sensing data are used. Technological advances and the digital age now allow access to and mapping of the deep zones of the lithosphere, the seafloor, the remote continental and insular areas, and beyond, the other planetary surfaces.
